Statement: Derek Chauvin Found Guilty Of George Floyd’s Murder

For Immediate Release

In the last sermon of the Prophet Muhammad as he returned back from holy pilgrimage, he delivered these words echoes in every time and place, “All mankind is from Adam and Eve. An Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab nor a non-Arab has any superiority over an Arab; also a white has no superiority over a black nor a black has any superiority over white except by piety and good action.”

On April 20th 2021, Derek Chauvin was convicted for the killing of George Floyd on May 25, 2020 after the white police officer held him down casually with this hands in his pocket and his knee on Mr. Floyd’s neck for nearly five minutes. During this time, Mr. Floyd was pleading to the officer to allow him to breathe. Muslims4peace would like to extend our heartfelt greetings and sympathies to George Floyd’s family and although we celebrate this verdict, we acknowledge that no verdict can bring George Floyd back. His family and friends will grieve his loss forever and the injustice committed cannot be properly compensated. This verdict rightfully holds Derek Chauvin accountable for his actions, but true justice remains an illusion for our Black brothers and sisters and other persons of color who continue to suffer from systemic discrimination in policing, criminal justice, health care, housing, employment, and education.

This trial was a momentous event as the world watched with bated breath. This verdict will likely raise strong emotions and reactions for many in our community. As necessary, we will make space for the community to share their thoughts and process their emotions together.

Muslims4peace will strive to create awareness and educate community members on social justice, racial advocacy, and civic engagement by providing learning and training opportunities, resources, and building relationships with allies in interfaith and intra-faith communities.
