KHUMS ZAKAT

It is obligatory on the individual who is sane, adult (physically mature), and wealthy (whose finances are secure through available assets or continuous income).

Zakat-ul-Fitrah is equivalent of three kilograms (about 6.6 pounds) of a popular food such as rice or wheat (per person). This is a $12 (US Dollar) minimum equivalent per eligible person. For example, a family of 5 would pay US $60.

This charity must be spent on the poor–those who do not have financial support for the year. It is not to be received by the Syed (descendants of the prophet Muhammad) unless the giver is Syed.

The Zakat may be paid directly to the poor, to your local mosque or center, or to the religious authority and their agents, who have knowledge and experience in the proper venues of appropriation.

If it is easier for you can send it to MFP ahead of time, and in turn we will devote the money on your behalf on the night of Eid it will be sent to the poor and needy.

The MFP is proud to have permission (ijaza) from His Eminence al-Sayyid Ali al-Sistani to collect Khums

Zakat al-Fitrah should be set aside on the eve of Eid al-Fitr and paid on the day itself, which marks the end of the Month of Ramadhan and is the first day of the month of Shawwal.

A sum must be paid on a person’s behalf as well as on behalf of all those who are his dependents. This would also include any guests who are staying overnight during the eve of Eid al-Fitr, under the care of the person.

On the day of Eid, the zakat will be distributed to the poor.

Can we give Zakāt al-Fitrah in advance?, Yes you can give Zakāt al-Fitrah anytime during the month of Ramadan before the night of Eid but the it’s mustahab to first give it as a loan and then to change your intention from it being a “loan” to “Zakāt al-Fitrah” when the time for giving Zakat al-Fitrah has entered.
